Spice Paste for Indonesian Nasi Goreng

Indonesian nasi goreng is a rice dish which makes use of pre-cooked fried rice and sambal chilli paste in its preparation. Thai brand Asian Home Gourmet’s Indonesian Nasi Goreng Spice Paste in 50g packet is an effort to replicate the authentic taste of the original nasi goreng dish. The dish is popular in Indonesia as a staple food, and it features a combination of tamarind, dried shrimp and chilli flavours in the stir-fried rice.

Packed with Indonesian staple sambal chilli paste, this instant sachet offers a handy serving of pungent flavour that sauces up a rich nasi goreng stir fry. Combining the best of East and Central Asian flavours, this paste builds layers of spicy and savoury into its juicy tomato base, adding shallots, soy sauce, chilli and shrimp into a deep red mixture that sizzles with umami goodness. Traditionally served with egg and fluffy rice for a soft, sumptuous texture, simply cook this paste with a stir-fried selection of seafood, meat and vegetables and finish with thinly sliced chillies and coriander for a refreshingly, fiery dish.

• Heat oil in a frying pan on medium-high heat. Add seafood, meat and/or vegetables and stir fry for 2 minutes.
• Push the saucepan contents to one side and add 2 beaten eggs. Cook for 1 minute and stir into the remaining contents.
• Add the rice and spice paste to the mixture and stir fry for 3 minutes.
• Add optional tomato chunks and stir-fry for a further 1 minute before serving.


Keep away from direct sunlight and store in a cool, dry place. Once opened, use immediately.


Indonesian Nasi Goreng (Serves 4):


1 packet Indonesian Nasi Goreng Spice Paste
2-3 tbsp vegetable oil
250g (1/2 lb) shelled prawns
2 eggs beaten
3 cups (600g) cooked rice
2 tomatoes, cut into eight pieces
Chopped coriander, thinly sliced red chillies or egg sunny side up as garnish (optional)

Cooking Instructions:
1. Heat oil in non-stick wok or pan on medium-high heat. Add prawns and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes
2. Push the prawns to one side. Add egg and cook for 1 minute. Add rice and spice paste. Stir-fry for 3 minutes
3. Add tomatoes and stir-fry for 1 minute or until hot. Garnish

Cooking Tip: Beef, lamb or chicken may be used instead of prawns.
